Dry Eye Disease is a chronic condition where your eyes either don’t produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears that evaporate too quickly. This leads to an unstable tear film, causing inflammation, discomfort, and blurry vision.
MGD occurs when the tiny oil glands along your eyelids become blocked or stop working properly. This disrupts the oil layer of your tear film, leading to Evaporative Dry Eye—the most common form of dry eye disease.
Common signs of MGD include a gritty or sandy sensation, burning, blurry or fluctuating vision, red or watery eyes, and discomfort with contact lenses. A comprehensive eye exam is required for a definitive diagnosis.
MGD can be caused by aging, hormonal changes, skin conditions like rosacea, and modern lifestyle factors—especially reduced blinking during screen use and living in dry environments.
Staring at screens significantly reduces your blink rate. Blinking is necessary to pump healthy oil out of your glands. Without frequent blinking, the oil hardens, leading to blocked glands and evaporative dry eye.
TearCare® is an FDA-approved in-office procedure that treats MGD by applying therapeutic heat to the eyelids using SmartLids™, followed by manual expression of the oil glands to restore natural tear film function.
No, it’s a non-invasive and generally comfortable procedure. Most patients describe the heat treatment as relaxing and spa-like. The manual gland expression is quick and causes only minimal discomfort.
TearCare® significantly improves both symptoms and tear stability. Relief typically lasts between 6 and 12 months. Since MGD is chronic, periodic maintenance treatments are usually recommended.
Unlike compresses that cool quickly and don’t maintain a therapeutic temperature, TearCare® provides consistent, controlled heat that effectively melts clogged oils. One treatment is often more effective than weeks of home therapy.
Adults 22+ with chronic dry eye symptoms due to MGD who haven’t found relief from drops or compresses are ideal candidates. It’s not recommended for those with pacemakers, active infections, or silicone allergies.
